About Time Carmelo Anthony Jim Brown and Others React

InstagramAfter Michael Jordan released a statement yesterday speaking up about violence by and against police, many in the sports world reacted to the retired NBA player’s stance. Atlanta Black Star reported Jordan was “saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late” adding, “I can no longer stay silent.” Carmelo Anthony thought the Charlotte Hornets owner’s opinion was overdue.During a meeting on community issues between Team USA players and local police in Los Angeles, Anthony praised Jordan for finally speaking out about a political issue, especially one that relates to African-Americans. It is something the former Chicago Bulls player has steered clear of in the past.“I thought it was brilliant and about time that he stepped up and said what he said,” the New York Knicks forward told ESPN at the Boys and Girls Club in California. “Because at the end of the day, amongst us, he is our face. He’s an African-American above every powerful African-American, so for him to step up in the midst of these times right now, it was very big on his behalf.”Carmelo Anthony on Michael Jordan’s statement today. “I thought it was brilliant and about time he stepped up.” pic.twitter.com/D3htGey0MI— Arash Markazi (@ArashMarkazi) July 25, 2016“And not also just step up – it’s not always about money and giving back,” he said, referring to Jordan’s $2 million contributions to organizations dedicated to improving police and community relations. “But for him to step up and put his money where his mouth at, the timing was perfect.”Social media reaction was mixed.Jaison Oliver encouraged doubters to read about the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, one of the organizations Jordan gave $1 million to. But he also decried the other $1 million donation to the Institute for Community-Police Relations. However, Jordan absolutely could’ve better allocated the other $1mil he gave to the police chiefs org. Stop playing both sides, Mike.— Jaison Oliver (@oJaison) July 26, 2016And Beats Music’s director of influencer marketing Kenny Hamilton pointed out Jordan’s private philanthropy.Michael Jordan has donated money over the years for various causes in a silent manner. Yet people always criticize what they don’t know.— Kenny Hamilton (@KennyHamilton) July 25, 2016Besides Anthony, at least one other athlete has also commended the billionaire ex-baller. Jim Brown – who played for the Cleveland Browns from 1957 to 1965 – praised Jordan for finally speaking up about anti-violence.“I applaud Michael. He’s taken his time to, what I think, put his mind to what he was going say and represent,” Brown told the sports network. “He put his money there and the only thing I can do is praise him and thank him for reaching out for and using his tremendous people power in a way that I feel will make a difference in this country.”Still, some are more critical. Panelist Kevin Blackistone questioned why Jordan would donate to the Institute for Community-Police Relations and the Legal Defense Fund over Black Lives Matter.“I’m hard pressed to believe how you can be emotionally moved by the extrajudicial killings of Black men in this country, and then cut a check for a million dollars to the police,” he said on Around The Horn Monday. “The police aren’t in need of funding when it comes to this situation.”“Why not give the Black Lives Matter movement a legal arm and fund – and seed some funding to start that as a new civil rights movement for a new generation,” he said of the Legal Defense Fund donation. He added the star should use his platform as a Hanes underwear spokesperson to urge the company to “bring back some of the 30 plants they closed down in the early 2000s here and…bring those jobs back to urban America” to give Black youth better jobs. read more

Chinas Anbang raises offer for Starwood to 14 billion

first_imgChina’s Anbang Insurance Group Co raised its offer for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc to almost $14 billion, Starwood said on Monday, in the latest challenge to the U.S. hotel operator’s merger with Marriott International Inc.The bidding war for Starwood has pitted Marriott’s ambitions to create the world’s largest lodging company with about 5,700 hotels against Anbang’s drive to create a vast portfolio of U.S. real estate assets. The acquisition of Starwood, owner of the Sheraton and Westin brands, by Anbang would be the largest ever by a Chinese company in the United States.Anbang’s consortium, which includes private equity firms J.C. Flowers & Co and Primavera Capital Ltd, has offered $82.75 per share in cash, in what is reasonably likely to lead to a proposal that is superior to the deal with Marriott, Starwood said on Monday. Reuters had reported earlier on Monday that Anbang had raised its offer.Marriott’s latest cash-and-stock offer, which was announced on March 21, is currently worth around $78 per share. Starwood’s board has not yet changed its recommendation to its shareholders in support of the company’s merger with Marriott, Starwood said. A vote for Starwood shareholders to approve the Marriott deal is scheduled for April 8.”Marriott has the financial capacity and the wherewithal to push its bid up higher. However, so much of the transaction is based on Marriott’s current share price, I think investors would be less than thrilled if it increased its offer materially at this juncture,” said Bill Crow, an analyst at Raymond James.Marriott declined to say on Monday if it would raise its offer further. In a statement, Marriott said it was confident that the previously announced amended merger agreement with Starwood is the best course for both companies.”Starwood stockholders should give serious consideration to the question of whether the Anbang-led consortium will be able to close the proposed transaction, with a particular focus on the certainty of the consortium’s financing and the timing of any required regulatory approvals,” Marriott said in its statement. In any deal with Anbang or Marriott, Starwood shareholders will also receive stock in Interval Leisure Group Inc, which is getting Starwood’s vacation ownership business, currently worth $5.91 per Starwood share.Starwood shares were trading up 2.4 percent at $84.07 on Monday. Marriott shares were up 4 percent to $71.40, as some investors hoped Anbang’s move would prompt Marriott to walk away from an expensive deal.Anbang’s latest offer values Starwood at 13.5 times earnings. By comparison, peers Hyatt Hotels Corp and Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc are trading at around ten times earnings. To be sure, the Anbang offer is still cheaper than some of large real estate deals seen in the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis. Buyout firm Blackstone Group LP’s $26 billion leveraged buyout of Hilton in 2007, for example, valued that company at 15 times earnings.CFIUS REVIEWMarriott said last week it believes it could achieve $250 million in annual cost synergies within two years after closing the deal with Starwood, up from $200 million estimated in November 2015 when it signed its original merger agreement. An acquisition of Starwood by Anbang would probably face scrutiny by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), an inter agency panel that reviews deals to ensure they do not harm national security. However, sources have said both Starwood and Anbang believe that deal would receive CFIUS clearance.Under its latest merger agreement with Marriott, Starwood would pay a breakup fee to Marriott of $450 million.Lazard and Citigroup Global Markets Inc are financial advisers to Starwood, and Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP is its legal counsel. Deutsche Bank Securities and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher are advising Marriott.PJT Partners Inc PJT.N is Anbang’s financial adviser, while Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP is its legal counsel.last_img read more

BNP for constitutional amendment for pollstime govt

first_img.Senior BNP leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Monday urged the government to amend the constitution to insert the provision of an election-time government.”The prime minister has recently said an election-time government will be in place, but there’s no existence of such administration in the constitution,” he said.Speaking at a discussion, he further said, “If you (PM) accept the election-time government system, you can amend the constitution to incorporate the provision since parliament is in function, and you have two-thirds majority to do that.”Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said a non-party neutral election-time government system is crucial to include in the constitution to hold a fair and credible election and empower people to elect their representatives. He warned that their party together with people will take to the streets to realise their demand if the government does not take step for arranging the polls under the non-party government.Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 82nd birth anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman. In her recent address to the nation, prime minister Sheikh Hasina said an election-time government will be formed as per the constitution which will provide all-out cooperation to the election commission in conducting the next election.Reacting to her comments, BNP leaders have been saying that there is a provision in the current constitution to constitute an election-time government.About Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader’s comment that BNP’s stance on the election-time government is not clear, Mosharraf said, “There’s no ambiguity in our demand as we’ve clearly said the election-time government must be neural one, no matter what its name may be.”He said the non-party government will only assist the election commission to hold a fair and impartial election. The BNP leader alleged that the government is rather trying to mislead people over the polls-time administration issue.Mosharraf said they will go to people to drum up their support once their chairperson unveils the framework on the election-time government.last_img read more

Elon Musk sued for calling Thai cave rescuer rapist

first_imgTesla Motors Inc chief executive Elon Musk pauses during a news conference in Tokyo, Japan, 8 September 2014. Photo: ReutersElon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, was sued for defamation on Monday for falsely suggesting that a British caver who helped rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thailand cave in July was a pedophile and child rapist.Vernon Unsworth, who lives north of London, sued over Musk’s 15 July tweet to more than 22 million followers referring to him as a “pedo guy,” a comment for which Musk later apologised. He also claimed that Musk falsely called him a child rapist and sex trafficker in a 30 August email to BuzzFeed News.Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Musk and the company.Unsworth is seeking at least $75,000 of compensatory damages plus unspecified punitive damages in his complaint filed in the US District Court in Los Angeles. The Hertfordshire County resident said he also plans to file a second lawsuit with the High Court of London for reputational damage suffered in the United Kingdom.”Elon Musk falsely accused Vernon Unsworth of being guilty of heinous crimes,” L. Lin Wood, a lawyer for Unsworth, said in a statement. “Musk’s influence and wealth cannot convert his lies into truth or protect him from accountability.”The case adds to a slew of litigation against Musk, including over his running of Palo Alto, California-based Tesla.Musk stunned investors last month with tweets saying he had “secured” funding to take his electric car company private in a buyout valued at $72 billion, before backing off.The billionaire’s behavior has raised concerns about his corporate leadership, and several Wall Street analysts and some investors have urged Tesla to appoint a strong second-in-command. Musk has admitted to severe stress from running Tesla.’Sorry, pedo guy”Unsworth said he has been exploring caves since 1971, when he was 16, and now shares a house in the Thailand countryside near Chiang Rai with a 40-year-old woman who owns a nail salon. He said he became a target for Musk after cavers rejected Musk’s offer of a mini-submarine created by his rocket company SpaceX to rescue the soccer team which was freed from the cave on 10 July after an 18-day ordeal.Though Unsworth told CNN three days later that Musk’s offer was a “PR stunt” that had no chance of working and that Musk could “stick his submarine where it hurts,” he said that did not justify Musk’s use of Twitter and the media to defame him.The 15 July tweet by Musk touted the mini-submarine and then, referring to Unsworth with a shorthand description of pedophile, said, “Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it.”Three days later, Musk defended his mini-submarine proposal, but said he had “spoken in anger” toward Unsworth, and that “his actions against me do not justify my actions against him,” and that “the fault is mine and mine alone.”But Unsworth said Musk urged in his 30 August 30 email that the BuzzFeed reporter “stop defending child rapists,” and called him as “an old, single white guy From England” who moved to Chiang Rai, “renowned for child sex-trafficking,” to take a 12-year-old bride.Unsworth said he is not a pedophile, child rapist, child sex trafficker, husband of a 12-year-old bride, or liar, and that the defamatory statements “were manufactured out of whole cloth by Musk” because of the disagreement over the mini-submarine.”On the surface, it appears that Mr. Unsworth can assert the elements of defamation,” said Nancy Costello, director of the First Amendment Clinic at the Michigan State University College of Law, in an interview.”Being called a pedophile can be defamation per se, meaning the claim could obviously damage his reputation,” she added. The case is Unsworth v Musk, US District Court, Central District of California, No. 18-08048.last_img read more

Howard Homecoming – Whats Missing

first_imgThousands of people from across the world came to the District of Columbia to participate in Howard University’s recent homecoming events. But, many were surprised when key activities were left off the schedule.During the week of Oct. 18-22, Howard celebrated its homecoming week, with the name “Blueprint,” which, according to the university’s website, stood for recognizing the past, celebrating the present and embracing the future. Homecoming events took place on the main quadrangle known as “The Yard,” the Burr Gymnasium, and throughout the university. But, some signature events such as the parade and the gospel concert didn’t take place this year, and some alumni weren’t happy about it.Howard University homecoming is one of the District’s most popular events. (Courtesy Photo)“I miss the parade and I am disappointed that it was cancelled,” Ryscha Williams told the AFRO. “I miss the gospel concert too. There were also too many people in line at the events and you had to do too much walking to go to things.”Kevin Jenkins, a graduate of Howard, agreed with Williams. “I was disappointed that there was no parade,” Jenkins told the AFRO on Oct. 22. “After getting my haircut, I stepped on Georgia Avenue and said to myself, ‘Where is the judges’ stand?’”The reason for the missing events had more to do with the budget than with a lack of interest. “The budget was reduced dramatically, by 20 percent,” said Victor Montgomery, director of special events and development and alumni relations told AFRO. “In years past, we’ve gone over for events that cost a lot, like the Gospel show and the parade, but receive little or no return. This put us in a hole fiscally. This year, the goal was ‘less-is-more.’ We put our focus in making fewer events more memorable for all.”Howard University has celebrated its homecoming since 1924 and it is considered one of the leading annual entertainment activities occurring in the District. As many as 100,000 people participate in homecoming activities that include a football game with a battle between Howard’s band and the visiting band, Yardfest, and a concert event that takes place on the The Yard the Friday before the Saturday football game that features well-known artists and bands. This year, rapper-entertainer Common, vocalist Faith Evans and the band Ayyy-tone entertained thousands of people at the International Yardfest. The Yardfest also had vendors in white tents selling food, university and Greek-letter paraphernalia, and organizations such as the Peace Corps and the D.C. Army National Guard.“Yardfest speaks to the fellowship, community and Howard. Issues with the crowd caused us to cancel it in other years, but the alumni reached out and expressed how much of a signature the event is to Howard,” Montgomery said. The step show, featuring Greek-letter organizations, took place on Oct. 20 and was sold-out. “I am glad to see the step show back on campus,” Williams said. The step show features Greek fraternities and sororities stepping in cadence with dance routines.Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick said that “homecoming is a unique experience.”“It not only provides an opportunity for Howard University students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends to engage with one another but it also reminds us why the Howard University experience is essential to the genetic makeup of the Diaspora and the world,” Frederick said.Katherine Powell, a spokesperson for the homecoming committee, told The Hilltop Howard’s student-run newspaper, that changes were made to make homecoming more focused on its popular events.“We wanted to bring everything back to those core events, the very traditional Yardfest and step show, everything that is most exciting,” Powell said. “Obviously the parade, R&B show, and the gospel show were events that the community loved, however we wanted to make sure that we allocated all of our efforts and funds to do a very strong Yardfest and step show.”There were other events such as a “Committed to Breath” town hall meeting, an LGBTA Reception, and a Tailgate that ultimately had thousands of people at the school’s parking lot across from the university’s bookstore.Inga Willis told the AFRO she was going to enjoy homecoming, parade or not. “I am happy to come to homecoming,” Willis said. “I think the homecoming committee and the administration did what was feasible. There should always be a flexible schedule in regards to those things. Not having the parade didn’t stop me from having a good time.”William Anderson, a junior at Howard, looked at homecoming differently. “It is great to see people come together and have a good time,” Anderson told the AFRO. “In terms of the parade, I have always learned that there will always be glitches. The main purpose of homecoming is for people in the Howard family to come together and have a good time.”Alexa Lisitza contributed to this article.last_img read more

Twitter Stock Tumbles After Analyst Calls It Harvey Weinstein of Social Media

first_imgIn his research note Thursday, Citron’s Left wrote that “we immediately knew the stock had become uninvestable and advertisers will soon be forced to take a hard look at all sponsorships with Twitter.” He added that “this story has just begun and advertisers will be forced to make more morality-based brand building decisions.”Twitter trails Facebook and Google in growth, and “any form of tweaking of the business model to ‘monitor speech’ sends traffic, engagement, and total users backwards for Twitter — a death blow for a company playing catch-up,” Left wrote. “Twitter now not only faces the problem of conservative backlash but more importantly the ad buyer who must be sensitive to all social norms.” Citron set a long-term price target of $20 per share on Twitter; the stock was down 12.5% in midday trading, to $28.81 per share. [UPDATE: Twitter shares closed at $29.29 per share for the day, down 11.05%.]The selloff of Twitter stock also comes amid an investor backlash against Facebook, whose stock dropped 7.3% Wednesday. That came after the attorney general for Washington, D.C., sued Facebook on Wednesday, alleging the company failed to protect the private data of millions of users that wound up in the hands of Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm that used the information to target voters during the 2016 presidential election. In addition, a New York Times report Tuesday said Facebook had shared access to user data with more than 150 partners in ways more extensive than previously disclosed, which added to its mounting privacy issues. “As an investor, if you dislike Facebook you must absolutely HATE Twitter,” Citron’s Left wrote.Asked for comment, a Twitter rep referred to a response to the Amnesty International report by Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s legal, policy and trust, and safety global lead. In part, she said it was “unclear” how the organization defined or categorized “problematic” content.“We work hard to build globally enforceable rules and have begun consulting the public as part of the process — a new approach within the industry,” Gadde said in the statement. “As numerous civil society groups have highlighted, it is important for companies to carefully define the scope of their policies for purposes of users being clear what content is and is not permitted.” She added that Twitter welcomed further discussion about how Amnesty International defined problematic behavior “in accordance with the need to protect free expression and ensure policies are clearly and narrowly drafted.” Shares of Twitter fell more than 12% Thursday after a Wall Street analyst labeled the company “the Harvey Weinstein of social media.”In a note to investors, Citron Research founder Andrew Left — who is a noted short-seller — cited a study released this week conducted by Amnesty International that found Twitter was “a toxic place for women,” particularly women of color.According to an analysis by Amnesty International and Element AI of a crowdsourced review of 14.5 million tweets posted in 2017, about 7% of the tweets targeted at 778 prominent women in government and journalism in the U.S. and the U.K. were or abusive or otherwise problematic. Women of color were 34% more likely to be targets than white women, and black women were 84% more likely than white women to be mentioned in problematic tweets, the study found. (The study did not look at abuse directed toward men.) Over the past several years, Twitter has acknowledged the problem of widespread abuse and other problems like spam on its platform and has stressed that it’s taking active steps to improve the “health” of discussions. Twitter says it uses a combination of machine learning and human review to evaluate abuse reports and whether they violate its rules.Investor concern over Twitter’s exposure to abuse on the platform comes after the company posted its fourth straight quarter of profitability. During the third quarter of 2018, Twitter reported a revenue increase of 29% year-over-year thanks to strong ad sales.Twitter’s worldwide average monthly active user count for Q3 dropped by 9 million, to 326 million, while MAUs in the U.S. declined 1 million sequentially, to 67 million. The company said that was a positive sign that it was successfully pruning spammers and other suspicious accounts from Twitter.“We’re achieving meaningful progress in our efforts to make Twitter a healthier and valuable everyday service,” CEO Jack Dorsey said in announcing Q3 results. Malta categorized as tax haven EU tax report suggests

first_imgOver 500 MEPs (505) have today voted in support of a resolution which categorizes Malta has having all the hallmarks of a tax haven. The country was one of seven countries which have been named in a report by the European Parliament’s Tax3 Committee, criticizing the extent of foreign direct investment which the national economy could only explain away in a very limited way.The report requests that the European Commission assesses the strength of a member state’s laws and initiatives referring to companies which have a registered address in the member state, which may be used for the purposes of tax fraud, money laundering or strategic tax evasion.According to the report, Malta is among five countries including Luxembourg and the Netherlands which have a high share of FDI.The vote today also lays the basis of measures for a harmonized EU corporate tax base, as well as an agreement where qualified majorities in the EU Council, can vote on tax issues.MEPs against harmonisation Interestingly, during yesterday’s debate on the Tax3 report, both Maltese MEPs Alfred Sant and David Casa presented their views against harmonization. While the PL MEP Dr Sant explained that tax flexibility was a key tool for allowing small economies to stay competitive, the PN’s MEP David Casa said he objected to a ruling that surrendered elements of autonomy on tax.‘I am always at the forefront when fighting against corruption. But I will use the same energy and determination against those pushing proposals to change taxation systems across Europe. Such proposals could be detrimental to many citizens across the EU, including those I represent.’ Casa told fellow MEPs.Golden visas and WhistleblowersIn addition to ways to improve harmonization and monitoring of member states with higher degrees of FDI, the report also called for the phasing out of the Golden visa and passport services, specifically focused on Malta and Cyprus over their poor networks of due diligence. The Tax3 report also called for improving protection investigative journalists as well as the creation of an EU fund to support them and their work.WhatsApp SharePrint last_img read more
