About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Liverpool legend Nicol: FSG to blame for FA Cup exitby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool legend Steve Nicol has slammed the club’s owners over their FA Cup exit at Wolves on Monday night. With Liverpool suffering Champions League, Europa League, League Cup and FA Cup Final defeats since FSG bought the club in 2010, it leaves the 2012 League Cup as both the Reds’ last trophy and only silverware of the American group’s Anfield stewardship.Nicol told ESPN FC: “For the big teams, particularly in England, it’s about the Premier League and Champions League.“Let’s not forget, that Kenny Dalglish got the sack after winning silverware at Liverpool, and losing the FA Cup final. So, work that one out.“So the owners want the Premier League and the Champions League clearly.“If Jurgen Klopp doesn’t want to sacrifice anybody in order to win the Premier League or the Champions League then he’s going to do what he did the other night and play what, three first team [players]?”Nicol accused his former side of disregarding the competition as they suffered their fourth-successive third or fourth round exit under Klopp.“Well, yes, because of the era I played in – yes I do (have a problem with domestic cups not being taken seriously).“All the other trophies meant something, the Carabao Cup used to mean a lot.“The FA Cup was absolutely huge, it for me was basically the player’s tournament.“But times have changed, and now it’s about Premier League and Champions League.”
The Ohio State men’s basketball team is more than a month away from kicking off its 2011-12 season, but its Final Four hopes have already taken a small hit. OSU announced Monday that incoming freshman LaQuinton Ross was ruled an academic non-qualifier by the NCAA and will not be on the Buckeyes roster when the team opens practice on Oct. 14. Ross, who according the Rivals.com was the No. 43 overall recruit in the class of 2011, was the highest-ranked of the five players who committed to play for OSU coach Thad Matta this season. In his senior season of high school, Ross averaged 25.4 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. As an academic non-qualifier, Ross did not meet the academic standards that are required for all NCAA Division I athletes. According to the NCAA’s official website, an incoming student must be a high school graduate, achieve a 2.0 GPA and present a qualifying score on either the SAT or ACT. Academic non-qualifiers are not permitted to receive an academic scholarship for a full year, meaning that Ross likely won’t play for the Buckeyes until the 2012-13 season, at the earliest. Despite Ross having signed a letter of intent last November to play for the Buckeyes, being ruled as an academic non-qualifier returns his status with the NCAA back to that of a prospect. As a prospect, Ross is allowed to be recruited and can sign to play with schools other than OSU, granted that he academically qualifies for the 2012-13 season. Ross has spent the past summer in Columbus, playing alongside current and former OSU players. CBSSports reported on Monday that Ross, who attended high school at Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J., would be returning to his home state of Mississippi to “take a class and retake the SAT.” From his Twitter account, @qross2011, Ross posted on Friday at approximately 7 p.m.: “Struggling is something I’m use to!! I seem to bounce back everytime this time want be any different!!” The Buckeyes were hoping that Ross, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward, would help replace some of the perimeter scoring that the team lost when forward David Lighty and guard Jon Diebler graduated. With senior guard William Buford and sophomore swingmen Deshaun Thomas and Jordan Sibert returning this year, it is possible that Ross may not have found playing time in Matta’s rotation. With 2010-11 All-American and OSU leading scorer and rebounder Jared Sullinger returning for his sophomore season, the Buckeyes are expected to be a top-five team to start this season. OSU kicks off its regular season on Nov. 11 against Wright State in the Global Sports Shoot-out.

Dave and Les Jacobs/Blend Images/Getty Images If you’ve got an extra $2.95 million lying around (and who doesn’t?), the remains of a baby Tyrannosaurus rex could be yours. An eBay listing for a young T. rex’s 15-foot body and 21-inch skull is drawing attention because, well, when was the last time you saw a dinosaur for sale online?According to the Lawrence Journal-World, the T. rex belongs to Alan Detrich and had been on exhibit at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum. The university pulled the bones from display after the listing went up.Detrich didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but in a tweet from April 10 said, “Today I will remove my 68 million year old 4 year old T-Rex Fossil that has been on display at the Museum for the past two years. …….Your Welcome.”Detrich reached out to J.R. Bissell, who runs Pirate Gold Coins, to actually list the bones on eBay. Bissell describes Pirate Gold Coins as a marketplace and “quasi-online museum” for artifacts. In a statement, Bissell said:”Whether or not you agree with the private sale of artifacts such as the baby T-Rex, the simple fact is this — many archaeological explorations require private funding. The individuals or groups that have the capital necessary to provide funding for archaeological exploration cannot sustain their efforts if they do not receive a return on their capital. As such, a private market that allows investors to recoup costs and derive profit in exchange for the high degree of risk that is required to fund archaeological exploration is absolutely necessary.”On Twitter, the museum sought to clarify that it was not involved in the sale, saying “the specimen on exhibit-loan to us has been removed from exhibit and is being returned to the owner. We have asked that the owner remove any association with us from his sale.” Culture Tags So far, no one has made an offer on the bones, although about 774 folks are watching the auction as of this writing. eBay didn’t respond to a request for comment. Detrich told the newspaper he and his brother discovered the bones in Montana in 2013. According to his Twitter account, this isn’t his first T. rex sale. Detrich tweeted that he sold another one he dubbed Samson for “millions of dollars.” In a letter dated April 12, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology expressed ethical concerns about the sale. “Because vertebrate fossils are rare, most of them contribute uniquely to our knowledge of the history of life. Each one that is lost from the public trust, is part of that already fragmentary history that we will never collectively recover,” the letter said.
