Aaron Ramsey is a fantastic player. “The No 8 is such a beautiful number that it had to end up on someone’s back. My preferences were two, Ramsey or an academy player who moved up to the first team.”
Saturday night, after Kentucky lost its first and only game of the 2014-2015 college basketball season, sophomore guard Andrew Harrison made a big mistake at his team’s post-game press conference, uttering a very NSFW phrase while his microphone was turned on. Harrison, who is facing criticism for the transgression, has since apologized. If you missed it, Harrison, after listening to his teammate Karl-Anthony Towns get asked about Wisconsin big man Frank Kaminsky, muttered “f*** that n****” to himself. Undoubtedly, it was stupid. But it was not racist. And there is no double standard going on here. For some reason, a number of college basketball fans are making the argument that if the situation had been reversed, and it had been Kaminsky uttering those words to himself, he’d be labeled a racist. Any by that logic, because Harrison isn’t being labeled as a racist, and because he isn’t likely to face any serious punishment, there is a double standard going on here. We’re not making this up. There are hundreds, if not thousands of tweets about it.If Andrew Harrison was white, we’d have a national catastrophe on our hands. Talk about a double standard— Alex Petik (@MuskyMaster5033) April 5, 2015Such a double standard with race I hate it. Andrew Harrison says what he says and it doesn’t get blown up but if it was other way around…— Tyler Boyle (@theeroyalboyle) April 5, 2015If Frank K had said the EXACT same thing about Andrew Harrison, think it would’ve been swept under the rug? What a double standard!— Dtrain41 (@DaneHenderson1) April 5, 2015If Andrew Harrison isn’t kicked out of school it’s a double standard @KentuckyMBB— Lara McGlynn (@lalalaLaraxo) April 5, 2015Obviously, if Kaminsky, a white man, had called Harrison, an African American, the n-word, he’d have been (rightfully) labeled a racist. There’s no doubt there. But comparing this to the Oklahoma SAE issue is absolutely insane.Where’s the disconnect here? Whether or not you agree with it, many African Americans refer to each other using the n-word. It’s part of the hip-hop culture. It’s part of the locker room culture. Heck, even ESPN’s Michael Wilbon admits that he and his friends use the word to “endearingly” refer to each other. To be clear, there was nothing endearing about what Harrison said about Kaminsky. But in the context of the situation, if Harrison had said “F*** that dude”, he’d be essentially saying the same thing.Harrison acted like a sore loser, and again, he should never have said what he said. But there is no double standard here. Just stop.
Only in baseball can $2 million in cash, plus the Nos. 56 and 75 overall picks in the draft, seem like chump change. That’s what the St. Louis Cardinals were forced to give the Houston Astros as punishment for hacking into Houston’s scouting database several years ago. All told, it was an unprecedented penalty to be levied against a baseball team for an unprecedented act of espionage.Yet compared to cheating scandals in other sports, the Cardinals got off easy. Using the various draft-value charts floating around in the sports analytics blogosphere, let’s compare the relative value of the picks St. Louis relinquished with the consequences of some of the NFL and NBA’s biggest cheating scandals in recent memory. (We’ll put aside any monetary penalties, simply because each sport has its own salary structure, making those kinds of cross-league comparisons difficult.)According to research conducted by The Baseball Analysts, a sabermetric blog run by Rich Lederer, the 56th and 75th picks in the MLB draft tend to produce about 4.9 wins above replacement over their careers. How much is that? Losing 5 WAR over, say, a 10-year span decreases the average team’s odds of winning at least one World Series in the decade by 1.4 percentage points.1Based on a logistic regression for MLB teams since the 1994 strike.By contrast, consider the New England Patriots. For their role in Deflategate, they were stripped of the No. 29 pick in the 2016 NFL draft, plus a fourth-rounder (let’s say No. 1302That’s the final non-compensatory pick of the fourth round, which would go to the Super Bowl champion; our Elo prediction model currently favors the Patriots to beat the Falcons on Super Sunday.) in 2017. According to Chase Stuart’s draft value chart, those picks tend to produce about 43 total points of approximate value over their careers, the loss of which over a decade would cost a team 4 percentage points from their odds of winning at least one Super Bowl in that span.3Based on a regression since the NFL playoff field expanded to 12 teams in 1990. I also assumed a replacement-level NFL player would produce about 6 points of AV over that span. And the Patriots’ penalty for Spygate seven seasons earlier — losing the 31st pick in the 2008 draft — would lop 3.2 percentage points off a team’s odds of winning at least one championship in a 10-year period.(Similarly, the New Orleans Saints’ Bountygate scandal, which cost them a pair of second-round picks, carried a penalty that would decrease the average team’s odds of winning a Super Bowl over the next decade by a whopping 4.4 percentage points.)The granddaddy of all league-imposed draft-pick sanctions probably belongs to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who lost five first-rounders for an under-the-table agreement with forward Joe Smith that attempted to circumvent the NBA’s salary cap rules. Although two of the picks were eventually restored, those that weren’t were worth about 61 career win shares, according to research by Basketball-Reference.com founder Justin Kubatko.4Note that it’s impossible to reconstruct exactly where the Wolves would have drafted in an alternate universe without the penalty, because the sanctions changed their roster for years to come. But going from their actual records, they would have owned the No. 13 pick in 2001, No. 23 in 2002 and No. 28 in 2004 — which add up to a value of 61 WS. Losing that many wins over a 10-year period5While also adding back in the roughly 8 win shares generated by replacement-level players. would reduce an NBA team’s championship odds for the decade by 6.5 percentage points — a crushing blow that helps explain why Kevin Garnett had to leave Minnesota to win his first championship. In light of those comparable scandals in other leagues, the Cardinals got away with a relatively light slap on the wrist. But then again, in a sport where the World Series favorite only has a 15 percent chance of winning it all in any given year, every single point of championship probability counts. Share on Facebook

OSU coach Urban Meyer prepares to lead the Buckeyes onto the field before the OSU- Army game on Sep. 16. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorThe No. 11 Ohio State football team (3-1, 1-0) has shown substantial progress in its last two games with a 54-21 win against UNLV Saturday and a 38-7 victory versus Army two weeks ago.. As such, the team has not seen any drastic changes in the depth chart in its weekly update. The only change this week was the removal of defensive tackle Malik Barrow from the fourth spot at his position. Barrow suffered a season-ending torn ACL during Saturday’s win against UNLV.Freshman middle linebacker Tuf Borland was still listed as a co-starter with redshirt senior Chris Worley. Worley missed all of last week’s game against UNLV with a foot sprain, the same injury that took him out of the first quarter against Army. Redshirt sophomore C.J. Saunders remains listed as the third-string H-back under Parris Campbell and K.J. Hill. The depth chart can be found here.

Fire managers with the Division of Forestry are working collaboratively with refuge personnel to manage the fire to reduce future wildland fire hazards and enhance wildlife habitat. The fire is located in an area where no values are threatened or where the likelihood of fire impact to values has been mitigated. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享As fire managers continue to monitor the Swan Lake Fire, the Pioneer Peak Hotshots and Gannett Glacier Fire Crews are on standby and ready to assist with the 6,951 acre fire north of Sterling when necessary.Aerial photo taken 6/13/19The Fire was estimated at 6,951 acres after a reconnaissance flight Wednesday evening, nearly doubling in size since the previous estimate the night before. Miller: “We did this to minimize the amount of folks that are back there, we had some sightseers going back there to get a closer look. We also want to make sure that any of the firefighters traveling back and forth have a safer route.” Steve Miller with the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: “We are still just monitoring the fire. What we do now have is a crew that if we do determine that we need to do some suppression activities we can, we have not actively suppressed this fire at all, but we have people setup. Right now it is moving in the best possible direction it can move. The crews are just in case it moves towards one of the existing fire breaks we can either burn off an existing fire break and stop it from heading in a certain direction. We just now have a crew in place to do that.” Questions or requests for copies of the closure order or maps should be directed to the Refuge at (907) 262-7021. People with recreational-related questions should contact the Refuge visitor center at (907) 260-2820. The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has closed the Mystery Creek Road, East Fork Moose River and Enstar Pipeline right-of-way which are north of the Sterling Highway along the eastern edge of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The closure will remain in effect through July 11. Most of the new growth was to the northwest and northeast away from the Sterling highway and 5 ½ miles from the community of Sterling. Sarah Saarloos, with the Division of Forestry: “It continues to burn in that limited protection area of the refuge. The fire burned West into that 2017 East Fork Fire star, so there was movement to the northwest and northeast, similar to the pattern we saw yesterday. We didn’t see any movement South towards the highway so it’s still 2.7 miles North of the Sterling Highway.” The Sterling Highway visibility warning is still in effect around Mile 68 and 75. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution driving through the fire area due to heavy smoke.
A team of researchers at IBM has developed a new way to measure the magnetic field of individual atoms that offers 1000 times the energy resolution of conventional techniques. In their paper published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, the team describes their approach, how well it works and their hope that they will be able to modify it in such a way as to allow others with less specialized hardware to use it. Explore further Journal information: Nature Nanotechnology Scientists are eager to better measure the magnetic fields of individual atoms because they believe it will lead to a better understanding of material and biological interactions—most particularly those involving weak magnetic interactions. Current methods rely on using defects in diamonds, though the team at IBM notes that prior work at their lab shows that it is possible to measure weak interactions in another way, an approach described as challenging. In this new effort, the team has come up with a way to get the job done that is relatively simple, though, they note, it requires special hardware. In the new approach, an atom called a sensor is placed near a target atom inside of a scanning tunneling microscope—a magnetic field is then applied to the microscope followed by a jolt of electricity to the tunnel junction. From there on, the frequency of the atom is monitored—when it matches the spin of the precess (the axis of rotation around a magnetic field that reflects its degree of magnetism), it reveals the measure of the magnetic field. The change in orientation is measured by moving the sensor atom to the microscope’s sensor tip.The researchers found their approach to be far more accurate and easier to read than other methods, pointing out that the signal they got from the technique was both stronger and more robust. They note also that few other labs likely have the combination of equipment (such as the high frequency cabling added to the microscope) required to replicate their technique, so they plan to continue the work in hopes of achieving the same results under more relaxed conditions. © 2017 Phys.org This document is subject to copyright. Evolving from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain, modern Halloween has become less about literal ghosts and ghouls and more about costumes and candy. To celebrate the night of the dead, Delhiites dress up at their spookiest best.Skeletons, tombstones, spider webs and glowing pumpkins are amongst the popular decor items, but the list can go on and on. The day has become yet another excuse for youngsters to dress up at their horrific best and have some fun. Party stores, costume shops and make-up artists are gearing up to cash in on the trend to transform people into creepy characters ahead of the festival. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Know to be an American holiday, Halloween seems to be gaining fast popularity in India. “People have started getting quite serious about their looks, as many popular pubs and nightclubs in the city are throwing parties that hold ‘ghostly’ competitions and give away fancy prizes to the best dressed,” said – a makeover expert. Recognising an increasing demand for Halloween parties director of a local bar said, “We have decorated our pub with scary chandeliers and skeletons, making it look like a dark dungeon. Our in-house DJ will play scary music all night to make it a complete Halloween experience. We are also calling three artists to paint faces.” Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixChild-friendly Halloween setups also seem to be in demand as they are being organised to cater the needs of both parents and toddlers. “The idea is to involve the whole family in this festival, which is why we are going for a lighter Halloween theme party this year. We will have people dressed up in cartoon characters such as superman, spiderman etc. We are also organising a best-dressed competition and children will also be allowed to take instant photographs with their favourite cartoon character,” said an event organiser. In spite of being the most ‘in’ thing recently, Halloween somehow seems to be stuffed within the boundaries of a clubhouse or a private party. The famous trick or treat tradition is not that successful in a country where parents spend a lot of energy warning children not to talk to strangers. This puts us in a position to question the custom we have adopted mindlessly. Because let’s face it, no Indian parent would want their children to dress up in a blood sucking vampire costume, they would rather dress them up as engineers or doctors! While Dussehra was celebrated to fight good over evil then why to bring evil back in the form of Halloween? Think about it!
Bert Habets and Cecile Frot-CoutazFremantleMedia CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz is leaving the RTL Group-owned production and distribution giant to lead YouTube EMEA.Her exit comes after 23 years at Fremantle and its predecessors, and a process is already underway to find a successor.Frot-Coutaz (above right) is understood to have a twelve-month notice period, but is unlikely to work all of that. RTL said its executive committee was in “constructive talks” with her about “a smooth transition at the helm of the group’s global content arm”.RTL CEO Bert Habets (above left) credited Frot-Coutaz for putting “creativity back in the centre of the company” since her reign began in 2012, when she succeeded Tony Cohen.“With its expanding slate of high-end drama series and iconic entertainment shows, FremantleMedia is strongly positioned to grow significantly in the future,” he added. “I regret, but understand Cécile’s decision. All of us wish her the best in her future endeavours.”Frot-Coutaz’s appointment at YouTube will likely be confirmed officially today. At the Google-owned business, she will work closely with YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl on growth strategies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.“I’ve always said that two things would need to be the case for me to consider leaving,” she told Fremantle staff in an internal memo seen by TBI. “First, and most importantly, Fremantle would need to be firing on all cylinders – brimming with creative excellence and unstoppable momentum. Second, it would take a unique challenge that offers me something completely new and different.”“Both of those conditions have been met, and it is therefore with a heavy heart but unshakeable confidence in the future that I have decided to leave Fremantle and open a new chapter in my professional life.”She added that she would not be exiting until a successor was picked, and said: “I go on to explore new challenges safe in the knowledge that Fremantle’s best days lie ahead.”French-born Frot-Coutaz’s relationship with Fremantle goes back to 1994, when publishing company Pearson bought Grundy Television and established Pearson Television Group. At that point, she was named corporate strategy officer, and next shepherded the integration of All-American Fremantle into the Pearson TV.Later, after a spell working on online and interactive strategies, she joined the newly rebranded FremantleMedia in LA as executive VP of commercial and operations. By 2005, she had been appointed CEO and was then named as Cohen’s London-based successor for the wider group in 2012.Since then, she has focused on investments in new companies, and high-end scripted dramas to sit alongside reality format stalwarts such as The X Factor, Idol and Got Talent in the Fremantle stable. The company recently moved out of children’s TV production, selling the assets of its FremantleMedia Kids & Family unit to Boat Rocker Media. The news comes less than four months after Habets became RTL’s sole group CEO, with Guillaume de Posch stepping down. Anke Schäferkordt had left the other co-CEO spot twelve months ago. Those changes are separate, however, and sources have described Frot-Coutaz’s exit as “entirely amicable”.
