To observe Child Month, the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) undertook a tree-planting exercise with students at selected primary schools, in the parishes of St. Andrew and St. Catherine, culminating at Naggo Head on Thursday, May 30.Other schools visited were Harbour View on May 16; Padmore on May 21 and Bridgeport on May 28.The activity was carried out in association with the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.[RELATED: JIS Launches Tree Planting Initiative for Child Month]The students were happy and appreciative of the initiative. Twelve-year-old student of Naggo Head Primary, Dejean Cousins, said “it is really nice that the JIS has come to help us in the planting of trees and the beautification of the school. We need a lot of trees, especially on the field, so we can get shade. It is hot during the days, especially when we are doing Physical Education.”This view was reiterated by caretaker of the school, Henry Green, who said that the trees, when grown, will be “good for shade during the days and will keep the place cool. The playfield needs trees around it.”For her part, Principal of Bridgeport Primary School, Lorna Lewis, was very enthused when the JIS visited her school, as the students are currently working on a project to enhance the appearance of their school.“Trees are very important to our environment. The front of our school really needs a facelift, and we have been doing a few things to enhance the school, so when we heard that JIS wanted to come we were very happy. In a little while when you’re driving by, you’ll be very pleased to see what you have helped us to achieve here at Bridgeport,” she said.[RELATED: Forestry Department on Mission of Reforestation]The Forestry Department donated seedlings to the project. Client Services Forrester in the Department, Nicola Hutchinson Scott, as well as Senior Director, Forest Science and Technology Services Division, Donna Lowe, gave short presentations at each school about the importance of trees.Due to a decrease in the amount of trees across Jamaica, the Department is currently on a mission to increase forest cover over the country by two per cent over the next 10 years.Contact: Christine Ade-Gold

pic.twitter.com/FBPPlHWQOh— KU Natural History (@kunhm) April 9, 2019 Share your voice $2.95 million could get you a baby T. rex. Dave and Les Jacobs/Blend Images/Getty Images If you’ve got an extra $2.95 million lying around (and who doesn’t?), the remains of a baby Tyrannosaurus rex could be yours. An eBay listing for a young T. rex’s 15-foot body and 21-inch skull is drawing attention because, well, when was the last time you saw a dinosaur for sale online?According to the Lawrence Journal-World, the T. rex belongs to Alan Detrich and had been on exhibit at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum. The university pulled the bones from display after the listing went up.Detrich didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but in a tweet from April 10 said, “Today I will remove my 68 million year old 4 year old T-Rex Fossil that has been on display at the Museum for the past two years. …….Your Welcome.”Detrich reached out to J.R. Bissell, who runs Pirate Gold Coins, to actually list the bones on eBay. Bissell describes Pirate Gold Coins as a marketplace and “quasi-online museum” for artifacts. In a statement, Bissell said:”Whether or not you agree with the private sale of artifacts such as the baby T-Rex, the simple fact is this — many archaeological explorations require private funding. The individuals or groups that have the capital necessary to provide funding for archaeological exploration cannot sustain their efforts if they do not receive a return on their capital. As such, a private market that allows investors to recoup costs and derive profit in exchange for the high degree of risk that is required to fund archaeological exploration is absolutely necessary.”On Twitter, the museum sought to clarify that it was not involved in the sale, saying “the specimen on exhibit-loan to us has been removed from exhibit and is being returned to the owner. We have asked that the owner remove any association with us from his sale.” Culture Tags So far, no one has made an offer on the bones, although about 774 folks are watching the auction as of this writing. eBay didn’t respond to a request for comment. Detrich told the newspaper he and his brother discovered the bones in Montana in 2013. According to his Twitter account, this isn’t his first T. rex sale. Detrich tweeted that he sold another one he dubbed Samson for “millions of dollars.” In a letter dated April 12, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology expressed ethical concerns about the sale. “Because vertebrate fossils are rare, most of them contribute uniquely to our knowledge of the history of life. Each one that is lost from the public trust, is part of that already fragmentary history that we will never collectively recover,” the letter said. Getty Images Even though the 2020 election is more than a year away, debate season is upon us. As 10 Democratic presidential candidates took the stage for the first time Wednesday night, folks on Twitter were primed for meme-able moments and general buzz. Data from Twitter Wednesday shows that the top-tweeted moments of the night were Cory Booker speaking in Spanish (he wasn’t the first or only candidate to do so); Elizabeth Warren saying she had a plan to “deal with” House Speaker Mitch McConnell; and the technical difficulties around some mics left on.The most tweeted-about candidates on the stage for the Democratic debate were:Elizabeth WarrenCory BookerJulián CastroBeto O’RourkeAmy KlobucharTulsi GabbardWhen it came to the most tweeted-about US politicians, though, President Donald Trump took the top spot, followed by Warren, Booker, Castro, President Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders (who will participate in Thursday’s debate). Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Awami League general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader. File PhotoThe Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) machine, which was set up in the heart of ailing road transport minister and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, was removed on Thursday morning as his condition is improving gradually, reports news agency UNB.“His heart is working fine without any artificial support,” Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) director Abu Naser Rizvi, who was accompanying the minister, informed media referring to the statement of cardiologist Philip Koh of Mount Elizabeth Hospital at noon. The kidneys of the minister have been functioning better than before and the quantity of sedative has also been reduced, said Rizvi.”The minister is also responding to doctors’ call,” he added. He further said many of his infections are under control. His wife Isratunnesa Quader and Md Mustafizur Rahman, Bangladesh High Commissioner in Singapore were also present at the briefing.Quader, also general secretary to ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL), was flown to Singapore on Monday for better treatment as per advice of renowned Indian cardiologist Devi Shetty. The minister was admitted to the BSMMU on Sunday morning following breathing complications. Later, physicians conducted an angiogram and found three blockages in his coronary arteries.
By WVUA 23 Web Coordinator David Williams IIITuscaloosa Flower Shoppe launched its annual Valentine’s Day program. Hearts on Fire for Arts ‘n Autism was developed by the nonprofit organization Arts ‘n Autism.Valentine’s Day is the most popular holiday of the year to send flowers to loved ones. Tuscaloosa Flower Shoppe is taking advantage of this by giving back to the community.“We have volunteers who come in and deliver our flowers for Valentine’s Day,” said Sarah Morrison, owner of the Tuscaloosa Flower Shoppe. “Each order has a $10 delivery on it and we donate that money to Arts N’ Autism.”Last year, a few businesses contributed to Hearts on Fire, and managed to raise $8,000 for the cause. This year over 40 different businesses throughout Tuscaloosa have teamed up and are poised to raise even more. You can donate in the amount of $1, $5, $10 or $25.“A lot of times a dollar doesn’t mean that much to you or me, but when you count everyone’s $1 or $5 together it makes a huge amount of money,” Morrison said. “It’s just amazing to see how the community wraps around events like this just to really bring all of it together so that we can raise money for Arts N’ Autism.”Whether you’re planning on sending flowers this year or not, you can purchase a heart on fire for Arts N’ Autism this year anytime until Feb. 28 at Tuscaloosa Flower Shoppe or several other locations throughout the city.
